Ethernet Range |
Ethernet range has expanded exponentially since the 1970s.
During the early stages of its development, Ethernet technology provided network
communication over a single cable. All devices were connected to
the same wire which served as a shared communication pathway.
Because it was originally designed as a local area network technology, Ethernet range was
rather limited. Since Ethernet could only connect devices
located within a few hundred feet of each other, the resulting
network could encompass only a small geographic area.
Addressing Limits in Ethernet Range
There are obvious limitations to a single-cable Ethernet system.
Signal interference and attenuated (weakened) signals limit the
reach of a network segment, and effectively constrain the maximum network diameter. These restrictions
also limit the number of devices that one can connect to a particular network. Thankfully, advancements in technology
over the years have considerably increased Ethernet range.
Among the first successful devices to address limits in Ethernet range were repeaters. Repeaters connect multiple Ethernet segments, thereby increasing the network diameter. Increased network size, however, led to congestion problems. This is where Ethernet bridges came in. In addition to increasing the network diameter, Ethernet bridges can regulate the signals and information traveling through the network and thereby transfer these signals with maximal efficiency.
If you are interested in increasing your Ethernet range, Patton offers a number of devices that can assist you. In addition to a wide range of repeaters and bridges, we also sell a number of routers and accessories, such as surge protectors, that can support your networking needs.
