SmartNode™ IP Loopback Interface

A loopback
interface is a logical IP interface which is not
bound to any physical network port, similar to the
localhost interface on a PC. Since it has no
bindings, the loopback interface is always up. It
can be used for many applications where a router
should be accessible at a given IP-address
regardless of its physical interfaces and their
states. The most common scenario is where internet
service providers want to organize all of their
edge routers in one ip-range, independent of the
underlying physical networks and changing WAN
addresses. This helps them improve manageability
and security.
Loopback interfaces are supported by all router
models of the SmartNode family of VoIP gateways.
