How-to: Configure SIP trunking on SmartNodes  by John Wu

For SIP trunking service providers, the soft switch investment is one of major initial investments. To fully realize the investment return potential, service providers need the flexibility to deploy SIP trunking services to a wide range of customers, including those customers who want to protect their investment and are not ready to throw away their existing PBX system.

This article describes three key instruments that facilitate offering a SIP trunking service. They address unique properties of a trunking service compared to a centrex-type service:

  • Trunking registration capability on the SIP side
  • Hunt group functionality on the ISDN side
  • VPN on the IP layer

All Patton SmartNode models run on the same VoIP operation system, called SmartWare. Smartware‘s trunking registration capability allows each trunking gateway to us a single SIP address and authentication account to support all the voice ports and DIDs. The flexible routing table in SmartWare's call router can route VoIP calls based on various SIP header fields even when the calls share the same SIP address.

The hunt group function is a perfect tool to assign incoming calls to multiple ports of the connected PBX.

VPN is another tool that is perfect for the case of a "PBX behind customer LAN". The VPN allows to aggregate all VoIP related traffic into a single tunnel and forward it to the service provider's hosting location. This will greatly simplify the LAN administration tasks, e.g. setting up NAT functions.

Last but not least, Patton‘s SmartNodes support a wide range of WAN access technologies. This is important in order to embrace as many customer location WAN access topologies as possible. SmartNode models are available with the following WAN interfaces:

  • ADSL2+/G.SHDSL
  • T1/E1 lease line
  • X.21/V35
  • Ethernet

Products in the SmartNode portfolio offer from 2 to 32 FXS or FXO ports, and ISDN PRI and BRI ports with 2 to 120 B-Channels. Combined with the aforementioned wide range of WAN access technologies, SmartNodes can deliver SIP trunking services to virtually all customers.

Here are the configuration examples for SIP trunking, hunt group and VPN. You can always contact support@patton.com for further support.
