Patton Announces G.703 Modem 2.3.1995
2.048 Mbps MegaLink-1 is also an Interface Converter/Rate AdapterPatton is very excited to announce the first "major" new product in our G.703 Series: The Patton Model 2703 G.703/E1 Modem. Dubbed theMegaLink-1, the Model 2703 is also an interface converter and multiplexer! Three Boxes in One The Model 2703 actually performs the task of three separate devices. As a modem the Model 2703 receives unstructured, synchronous 2.048 Mbps datafrom a G.703/E1 network and sends it to a router, bridge, multiplexer or other device. As an interface converter, the Model 2703 accepts either 75 ohmor 120 ohm G.703/E1 signals and converts them to EIA-530 (V.36/RS-422), V.35 or X.21 formats. Both dual coax and modular interfaces are providedon the rear panel of the Model 2703 for G.703/E1 connection. The various electrical terminal interfaces are switch selectable, and all use an HD-26connector. As a multiplexer, the Model 2703 allows a lower bandwidth device-256 Kbps, 512 Kbps or 1.024 Mbps-to connect to a 2.048 Mbps G.703E1 link. Highly Adaptable Because of its versatility in data rates and interfaces, the Model 2703 is able to fit into a variety of LAN and WAN environments. However, its primaryapplication will be in environments where two bridge/ routers need to communicate over a G.703/E1 link, but lack native G.703/E1 interfaces. Theinterface on the bridge/ router may be V.35, X.21 or EIA-530 (V.36/RS-422). An appropriate custom interface cable (available from Patton) is used toconnect the bridge/ router to the Model 2703, which has an HD-26 terminal interface. Internal switches match the Model 2703 to the electrical interfaceon the bridge/router. The two Model 2703 modems then communicate over the G.703/E1 link. Since both 75 ohm (dual coax) and 120 ohm (modular)connections are provided on the Model 2703, no special adapters are needed. Adding to the Model 2703's versatility is its ability to operate from internal, external or network (received loop) clock sources. Loopback diagnostics and front panel LEDs are also included. There are also three power supplyoptions for the Model 2703: 120/240 VAC (switchable), 100 - 240 VAC (universal) and 48 VDC. Rackmount Too As with many Patton standalone devices, there is a 2U high rackmount version of the MegaLink-1. The Model 2703RC fits in Patton's 16-slot rackchassis and 2/4/8 slot cluster boxes. The Model 2703RC has all the capabilities of the standalone unit, except multiplexing. A compensating benefit is achoice of rear interface cards that eliminates the need for custom terminal adapter cables. Price for the standalone Model 2703 starts at $1295.00 each.Custom terminal adapter cables are $45.00 each. The rackmount Model 2703RC is $1195.00 each, not including the chassis and power supply. Productis scheduled to begin shipping March 1, 1995.
