Industrial Switch: Unmanaged Industrial Ethernet Switch

An unmanaged industrial Ethernet switch interconnects devices on an industrial network using Ethernet to transmit and receive packetized data among endpoints. Such equipment may also be known as a hardened Ethernet switch, industrial-grade switch, ruggedized Ethernet switch, or ruggedized network switch. Industrial Ethernet switches are often designed in conformance with standards such as Ingress Protection Codes (IP codes) IP30 or IP67. An unmanaged Ethernet switch is much simpler to operate than a managed switch. However, it does not offer configuration, monitoring, or control capabilities of a managed switch.

An Industrial grade switch is sometimes designed to be mounted on a DIN rail—a widely used standard metal rail used to mount industrial control equipment. The term DIN rail refers to the German standards body, Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN), which published the original specifications since adopted as European (EN) and international (IEC) standard.

Unmanaged Switch Benefits

The primary advantage of an unmanaged switch is cost. Typically a managed switch will cost on the order of ten times as much as an unmanaged Ethernet switch. The price difference can be attributed to the additional security and access control features that come with a managed switch. There is also a performance advantage to an unmanaged switch in that you can plug and play immediately with your network. There's no need to set anything up, and it has built-in QoS services to ensure its working well.

Application Environments

Patton's FiberPlex unmanaged industrial Ethernet switches are designed for use in such demanding applications as railways, water treatment, substation automation, roads and tunnels, as well as factory automation, IP surveillance and building automation systems (BMS).

Teach Me: Industrial Switches: Unmanaged Industrial Ethernet Switch

Think of unmanaged Ethernet switches as just adding Ethernet ports to your network. For some uses, that is all that is needed. If you have a limited number of available ports on routers and other networking products, unmanaged switches are perfect for allowing for additional hardware to be connected to the network. Unmanaged switches are plug-and-play devices that require no configuration or set-up activities during installation and activation. After you connect power and data cables the switch is ready to use.
