What is Power over Ethernet? Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a networking technology that uses a network cable (CAT5, common copper phone wire, or similar) to deliver electrical power to remote endpoint devices. Common endpoints for PoE solutions include VoIP phones, IP cameras, wireless access points (WAP).

A Power-over-Ethernet extender or PoE extender takes PoE technology to the next level by breaking two important boundaries:

1) A PoE Extender can extend the 100-meter distance limitation for standard Ethernet and up to 3,300 feet.

2) A PoE Extender can leverage existing copper twisted-pair cabling to deliver electrical power over the same network connection as the Ethernet data stream.

The advantages of PoE extension include time and cost savings and greater flexibility of endpoint positioning among others.

Electricity operates at a frequency of 60 Hz or less, while data transmission operates within frequencies between 10 million to 100 million Hz. By taking advantage of the frequency separation between electrical power transmission and digital data streams, both services can be delivered over the same cable using a PoE extension product, i.e. a PoE Extender. IEEE specification 802.3af provides for up to 5 watts of electrical power while IEEE 802.3at (PoE plus) provides up to 25 watts.
