What is DSL?

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) is technology used for transmitting digital data over existing traditional voice-grade copper telephone cable concurrent with an analog voice signal. DSL modems encode the voice signal in lower frequencies while the data is carried in higher frequencies on the same copper twisted pair (local loop). DSL deployment--using DSL modems as subscriber and service-provider equipment--is far less costly than installing new, fiber-optic cable along the same path.

DSL technologies have proliferated over recent decades into a family of variations, often summarized as xDSL. DSL modems, DSL VoIP, DSL router modem, DSL routers, and DSL gateways have emerged. Two highly-popular DSL flavors that are widely installed include very-high-bit-rate DSL (VDSL) and single-pair high-speed digital subscriber line (SHDSL), now standardized as G.SHDSL.bis. VDSL modem and G.SHDSL modem functionality today may be embedded a Voice-over-IP gateway, router or enterprise session border controller (eSBC), in which case the device is called an integrated access device (IAD). Recently DSL has been adapted to support Ethernet-in-the-First-Mile (EFM) applications.

VDSL2/ADSL2 + Router

OnSite 2201 - VDSL2/ADSL2 + Router
OnSite 2201
She may be small, but she packs a punch. The OS2201 supports bridging, static and dynamic routing, IPv4/IPv6, ACLs, TR-069 and a host of firewall/security features. The OS2201 is fully compliant with G.Vector and supports VDSL2 profiles from 8a to 30a.

G.SHDSL.bis EFM IAD

OnSite 3300 - G.SHDSL.bis EFM IAD
OnSite 3300
Bonding up to 4 twisted-pairs (8-wire), multiple bandwidth options combined with a rich software suite, the OS3300 is the ideal integrated access device (IAD) for service providers, campuses, or military/maritime networks that need high-speed EFM services over existing copper facilities.

VDSL2 DSLAM

ForeFront 3210P - VDSL2 DSLAM
ForeFront 3210P
This compact 1.5U device offers a 24-port VDSL2 IP DSLAM with 2 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces and a built-in POTS/ISDN splitter. Compliant with the ITU-T G.993.2 standard it supports a VDSL2 30a profile that features 100 Mbps of symmetric data rate over existing copper facilities.

G.SHDSL.bis EFM DSLAM

ForeFront 3310P - G.SHDSL.bis EFM DSLAM
ForeFront 3310P
EFM bonding over copper wires multiplies the bandwidth of a single twisted-pair link to provide the end-user with a very high-speed uplink and maintain the same distance of the single pair. The end-user’s uplink may be from 5.7 Mbps max with one pair up to 22.8 Mbps max with 4 bonded pairs.

Teach Me: DSL Applications

Typically a DSL deployment involves a DSL modem or DSL router or DSL gateway on the subscriber (end-user) premise and a DSL access multiplexor (DSLAM) on the service-provider or central-office side of the connection. Going beyond Internet connectivity, DSL connections are often useful for campus network architecture and military or maritime environments. A chief characteristic on DSL technology is the engineering trade-off between speed (rate) and distance (reach). Another trade-off is the line-rate capacity of symmetrical (equal upstream and downstream) versus asymmetrical (higher downstream) configurations.

Common DSL Applications

The Benefits of DSL Technology
The chief benefit of DSL is that it leverages existing copper twisted-pair cabling infrastructure. By using DSL modems, you can avoid the expense, hassle and delay of replacing your copper facilities with a new CATx or fiber-optic cabling plant. Further, DSL modems, routers and multiplexer offer flexible configurations that allow you to maximize and optimize the rate and reach of each connection based on the detailed wiring characteristics and noise environment.
