GAITHERSBURG, MD: Patton Electronics announced today that President and CEO, Robert R. Patton (Bobby), has accepted the role of Chair of the External Advisory Committee to the
Graduate and Transfer STEM Talent Expansion Program (GT STEP) program at Montgomery College (MC).
Funded by a recently-awarded grant from the National Science foundation (NSF), the project aims to grow Maryland's science and technology workforce by increasing the stream of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) graduates.
The program also promotes transfers from MC to such partner institutions as University of Maryland at College Park (UMCP), University of Maryland Baltimore Campus (UMBC) and the Universities at Shady Grove.
A native of Rockville, MD, Bobby holds a BSCS from UMCP. Accepting the appointment, Bobby commented, "As a product of Montgomery County Public Schools, Montgomery College, and University of Maryland, I feel I've come full circle on this engagement."
Within that circle of symbiosis, Patton Electronics also stands to benefit from the GT STEP project. As a Maryland employer, the manufacturer of high-technology equipment recruits workers from the STEM graduate pool.
Meanwhile, in the "giving back" category,
Patton—located in the Gaithersburg Airpark—supports workforce education with regular
internship opportunities for area STEM and high-school students.
"Patton's commitment towards building the workforce by engaging students from non-traditional backgrounds is laudable and expands on all the other workforce-education programs they support," said Bernadette Goovaerts, Business Development Manager, IT and Entrepreneurship at Montgomery County Department of Economic Development.
With respect to economic development, Patton actively
promoted legislation that helps small businesses expand their
international sales activities with funding for export-import activities.
Regarding support for academia and institutions of higher learning, Patton has quite a few irons in the fire:
-
Locally, Patton participates on the advisory board for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) National Academy of Information Technology (AOIT) and serves Capitol College as a benefactor in the
annual scholarship program and
Leadership
Advisory Council
-
Beyond state borders, Patton is involved with the Pisgah Astronomical Research
Institute (PARI), operating a satellite office on the site. Among other activities, the company is pursuing development of a robotics research project for K-12
students
- In 2010 Drexel presented Patton with the "Outstanding Co-op Employer of the Year" award, while MC honored Bobby (and four of his brothers) with the Milton F. Clogg Outstanding Alumni Achievement
Award
Next month, Mr. Patton will address the engineering student body at York College.
