GAITHERSBURG, MD: Patton is one of three
firms featured in the Washington
Post's July 14 article about local manufacturing operations in the Washington D.C.
vicinity.
Journalist Sarah Halzack observes: "For these businesses, making things in America —in the Washington area, specifically—is still a viable model, even if it brings with it some tough challenges. Here’s a look at three firms that are keeping their manufacturing jobs here and why they’re finding that to be good business."
As Halzack reports, Patton ships more than 70 percent of its products to customers outside the United States. Yet the maker of wireless routers, Ethernet extenders and voice-over-IP technology still does all its own manufacturing locally, in its Gaithersburg, MD headquarters.
In an interview with the author, Robert R. Patton, the firm’s president and chief executive, said part of his strategy is the simple belief that it’s the patriotic thing to
do:
"We want to keep the jobs here because we believe it’s the best thing for our
country."
Patton also explained that because the assembly line has become more high-tech,
the company requires highly-skilled workers that are well-educated in mathematics and science.
Patton has other reasons, too, for staying in Gaithersburg. For one, he doesn’t think that the set-up of many overseas factories is a good fit for his business. Patton products are often highly customized so Patton the flexibility to change the product labeling and packaging easily. That level of customization is not something Mr. Patton believes can be easily managed at an overseas facility.
