128 kbps Baseband Modem Goes 11 Miles/17.7 km

GAITHERSBURG, Maryland, USA, August 28, 1998 \96 Patton Electronics Company has announced a new baseband modem that supports communication distances up to 11 miles/17.7 km (4 wires, 19 AWG/.9mm). The Patton 1092A KiloModem™ connects switches, routers, multiplexers or other devices\97using standard 2B1Q modulation techniques\97over the 2-wire or 4-wire twisted pair circuits commonly installed by carriers. This allows the Patton 1092A to connect Telco/ISP customers to a CO or PoP in a local metropolitan area at sync data rates up to 128 kbps (async rates up to 38.4 kbps). Automatic equalization, gain control and echo cancellation techniques yield enhanced signal clarity and distance in areas where poor wire quality and mixed wire gauges are a problem. The Patton 1092A also supports Patton's QuikConnect™ interface modules, and allows remote management through its front panel software control port. SNMP network management is also supported using Patton's SNMP proxy rack card. The Patton 1092A incorporates LAL and RDL loopback test modes, as well as a V.52 BERT pattern generator. Data integrity is enhanced by transformer isolation and surge protection. Eight front panel LED indicators (TD, RD, CTS, CD, DTR, No Signal, Error and Test Mode) display the status of the unit and the link. Synchronous clocking options include internal, external and receive recovered clock. Patton QuikConnect™ Interface Modules
For flexible connection of WAN hardware, the Patton 1092A accepts replaceable QuikConnect™ interface modules. Five standard modules allow a single Patton 1092A "base unit" to connect to either V.24/RS-232, V.35, X.21, RS-422/530 or 64k/G.703 WAN hardware. Two specialized QuikConnect™ modules are also available: Patton's Ethernet WAN bridge module lets two peered Ethernet LANs communicate over 2 or 4 wires, eliminating the need for standalone bridges or routers. Patton's Voice+Data VDQM module allows a pair of Patton 1092As to simultaneously extend G3 fax, PSTN/compressed voice and synchronous data communications over 2 or 4 wires. Patton QuikConnect™ modules can be installed and removed without tools, and they can be paired in different combinations. All QuikConnect™ modules are supported by the Patton 1092A. Control Port
Using the 2B1Q modulation scheme, the Patton 1092A is able to send remote management information on the "D" channel. This means that a terminal connected to the Patton 1092A's control port can be used to send in-band configuration and control commands to both local and remote units (see Figure 4, below). In addition, the Patton 1092A (both standalone and rack mount) can be SNMP managed using Patton's SNMP proxy card. Price and Availability
The Patton 1092A is equipped with a standard 85-256VAC Universal Input power supply; DC power supplies are also available. The Patton 1092A KiloModem™ baseband modem is list priced starting at $745, which includes one V.24/RS-232, V.35, X.21 or RS-422/530 QuikConnect™ interface module.
