Patton in Sarajevo10.27.2000  GAITHERSBURG, Maryland - The beautiful city of Sarajevo, capital of Bosnia and Hercegovina, had become know as host of the Winter Olympic Games in 1984. When the world heard about Sarajevo again it was the victim of the tragic events of the Balkan wars. When international troops entered the city they found it devastated and its people starving. The first task was to rebuild the city's infrastructure. International aid enabled the most urgent projects, among them the repairing of the Water supply for the whole city of Sarajevo. In rebuilding the city's water supply system, automation and remote administration were key. Far from unlimited financial support, contracts were allocated based on best price/performance. The decision was made in favour of PATTON Electronics Model 1060 Short Range Modem (SRM). In combination with Allen Bradley's Programmable Logic Controllers, Model 1060's were installed at each important point of the water distribution system and connected to a central control room. Since there were 28 remote stations to be connected to one computer in the control room, the mixed star/daisy-chain topology was used and connected to a modem sharing device and attached to the control computer. The modems were ordered and supported through RAGA d.o.o. in Slovenia, the nearest distributor of PATTON's products in the region. Mr. Dare Zagar from RAGA d.o.o. comments, "One hitch was that the project required 24VDC supply for the SRM 1060. The problem was passed to the experts at PATTON Electronics Co., who kindly agreed to meet the customer's needs by modifying the power supply of the ordinary SRM from 220/110VAC to 24VDC. They also prepared a proposal for the complete communication solution, which proved as complete success.
