New AC-Powered Model 1050 Includes Loopback Tests, Optical IsolationWe have recently been receiving many requests for a "stripped-down", AC-powered, asynchronous short range modem. Here it is: the new Patton Model1050! Supporting asynchronous data rates to 38.4 Kbps, the Model 1050 can handle point-to-point distances up to 4 miles over two unconditioned twisted pair. This makes the Model 1050 suitable for most general RS-232 communication requirements, including host-to-terminal, laptop-to-PC, and PC-to-serial printer. But while the Model 1050 now occupies the "kid brother" position in Patton's powered short haul family (formerly held by the Model 1060), it still incorporates many sought-after features. For example: Loopback Test Modes. The Model 1050 incorporates local analog loopback and remote digital loopback tests as standard equipment. These tests are activated by a front panel push button. Optical Isolation. The Model 1050 has 2500V RMS of built-in optical isolation to protect against ground looping. Silicon Avalanche Diode surge protection is also standard. LED Indicators. The front panel of the Model 1050 incorporates three LEDs: transmit status (red=high, green=low), receive status, and test mode. DCE/DTE switch. An internal switch lets you configure the Model 1050 to connect to an RS-232 DCE or DTE device without need for a crossover cable. Three Connectors. The rear panel of the Model 1050 provides a female DB-25 for serial device connection, plus a both RJ-11 and internal terminal block (with strain relief) for twisted pair connection. Ultra-Compact Size. The Model 1050 is housed in an enclosure smaller than any of Patton's other AC powered short range modems. With outside dimensions of 1.58"H x 4.16"W x 3.75"D, the Model 1050 can fit in very tight spaces (and it takes up less room on the desktop too). Upward Compatibility. The Model 1050 is compatible with the Patton Model 1060, as well as the Patton Model 1226 parallel short range modem. This makes the Model 1050 an even more flexible tool to keep on the shelf for that unexpected application ("You want to put the printer where?"). The Patton Model 1050 will begin shipping November 1, 1994. Options include surge protection, as well as both 120V and 240V AC power supplies (with a variety of connector types). Oh, yes... Perhaps the most sought-after feature of the Patton Model 1050 is its standard list price of $145.00 each.
