Miniature Cat-5 Surge Protectors

WASHINGTON D.C., February 4, 1997 - Patton Electronics Company, Gaithersburg, MD has unveiled two new miniature 100Mhz surge protectors at ComNet '97. Measuring only 2.0" long and 1.0" in diameter, the Patton Models 571 and 581 connect directly to Category 5 data lines and protect 100Mhz hosts,workstations and communications equipment from data loss and damage due totransient surges. Topologies protected by the Patton Models 571 and 581include Fast Ethernet (100BaseT), 100VG-AnyLan, ATM and RS-422.

The Patton Models 571 and 581 connect in-line to Category 5 cable and protectpins 1, 2, 3 and 6 on the Category 5 RJ-45 jack. Surges are diverted tochassis ground through a heavy-duty braided metal strap. Both models areEIA/TIA TSB-40A Category 5 certified, and also comply with IEC standards801.2, 801.4 and 801.5 (both units are CE marked for sale in EC membercountries). Near End Crosstalk (NEXT) is better than -43 dB at 100 Mhz.Insertion loss is less than 0.4 dB at 100 Mhz, making the units appear to thenetwork as a few inches of Category 5 cable.

The Patton Model 571 installs at the point-of-use, connecting directly toterminal and communications equipment, and has been tested to withstand IEC801.5 Class 2 surges (1 kV). The Patton Model 581 installs at barriers(building entrances, between floors, electrical panes), and has been tested towithstand IEC 801.5 Class 3 surges (2 kV).
