Patton Announces the 2112 LanXtend™ Bridge9.8.2000 Patton LanXtender Connects Ethernets Three Miles Apart Using DSL Technology GAITHERSBURG, Maryland-Patton Electronics Company has announced a LanXtenderthat connects Ethernets three miles apart using DSL technology. The PattonModel 2112 LanXtend Bridge connects two peered 10Base-T Ethernet LANs (up to100 users) at distances up to three miles (4.9 km) over a single twistedpair. Using the LanXtend, corporations can connect an Ethernet LAN at thecorporate headquarters to a peered Ethernet LAN at a local branch office viaa dry, copper leased line. The LanXtend also allows universities, corporations, government agencies, and military bases to use their telephonewire to connect two peered Ethernet LANs across a large campus or betweenfloors in a high-rise building. "With the LanXtend, there is no need to run expensive fiber or installrepeaters to cover large distances between two peered LANs," said NormanIreland, V.P. of Marketing for Patton. "Especially in large buildings orcampuses, where offices are already connected by twisted pair telephonewires, the LanXtend provides an extremely cost-effective way to create an'always on' connection between two remote physical locations."The standalone LanXtend is also compatible with the Patton Model 1095RC mDSLrack card and Ethernet bridge rear card. This combination allows up to 13 or14 extended LANs to be supported from a single 2U rack chassis, using a 'huband spoke' configuration. The Model 1095RC is HTTP/SNMP manageable throughthe rack chassis using Patton's Model 1001MC SNMP proxy agent card. RemoteLanXtend units are also HTTP/SNMP manageable using this system. Product Overview Providing MAC level connection between two peered Ethernet LANs, theLanXtend operates transparently to higher level protocols, such as TCP/IP,DECnet, NETBIOS, and IPX. The LanXtend automatically discovers, loads anddeletes MAC addresses, and incorporates 512K of on-board RAM. The Model 2112has two modular RJ-45 jacks, one for connection to the 10Base-T LAN, and onefor connection to the two-wire twisted pair circuit. Diagnostics includeV.54 loops (LLB, RDL) and a V.52 compliant BER test patterngenerator/detector (511/511E).
