2/4-Wire Solution Extends Voice, Fax & Data5.29.1998 GAITHERSBURG, Maryland, USA, May 29, 1998 - Patton Electronics Company has recently unveiled a voice/data QuikConnect™ module for their KiloModem™ series of baseband modems. The Patton VDQM\96when installed in a Patton KiloModem™\96 allows voice, fax and data traffic to be carried simultaneously over a 2-wire or 4-wire transmission circuit, at distances up to 10.8 miles (17.3 km). Supporting user interfaces for G3 fax, synchronous data and PSTN/compressed voice traffic on a single module, the Patton VDQM is available in either FXS (appears as a telephone) or FXO (appears as a central office) configuration. Applications for the Patton VDQM include the interconnection of branch offices, as well as the combining of Internet, voice and fax traffic over a single circuit in a SOHO (Small Office/Home Office) environment. The Patton VDQM plugs into the rear QuikConnect slot of a Patton KiloModem and presents three ports for device connection: Port 1 (RJ-11) supports voice or fax transmission up to 14.4 kbps. Port 2 (RJ-11) supports a second voice line. Port 3 supports a synchronous data connection at speeds between 64kbps and 704kbps, depending upon the model of KiloModem being used. This data port is factory configured as a DCE, and is user-configurable for V.35, RS-232, X.21, RS-530 or RS-485 equipment connection. Such flexibility allows the Patton VDQM to connect to routers, switches, servers, multiplexers and other types of data communication hardware. When two Patton KiloModems are connected over a 2 or 4 wire circuit\96with each KiloModem housing a VDQM module\96voice/fax (port 1), voice (port 2) and synchronous data (port 3) traffic are combined at the local end and separated back out at the remote end. Applications A typical branch office (FXS to FXO) application for the Patton VDQM might appear as follows: One KiloModem (with VDQM module) resides at the branch office; one KiloModem (with VDQM module) resides at the corporate headquarters. The two KiloModems are connected by leased line. VDQM Port 1 connects a fax machine at the branch office to a fax machine at the corporate headquarters. VDQM Port 2 connects a voice phone at the branch office to the corporate PBX. VDQM Port 3 connects the branch office LAN (via router) to the corporate LAN (via router), thus providing Intranet/Internet service to the branch office. A typical SOHO (FXS to FXO) application for the Patton VDQM might look like this: One KiloModem (with VDQM module) resides at the SOHO; one KiloModem (with VDQM module) resides at the central office of the local telco. The two KiloModems are connected by a 2B1Q circuit provided by the telco. VDQM Port 1 connects a fax machine at the SOHO to the central office switch. VDQM Port 2 connects a voice phone at the SOHO to the central office switch. VDQM Port 3 connects the SOHO LAN (via router) to Internet/Intranet service provided by the telco. In this manner, the telco provides fax, voice and high speed data service to the SOHO using one line and one box. The Patton VDQM can also connect two sites without a PBX (FXS to FXS) over a single leased line. In this case, VDQM port 1 would connect a fax machine at site A to a fax machine at site B, VDQM port 2 would connect a voice phone at site A to a voice phone at site B, and VDQM port 3 would support an Intranet between sites A and B using low cost routers. Patton VDQM Voice/Data Module PricingThe Patton VDQM (model IM1/J) data voice module is intended for sale as a package item along with one of the Patton KiloModem base units. For example, a package consisting of the Patton Model 1092A KiloModem base unit (100-240VAC power), plus the VDQM, is list priced at $1,725.
