New Stat Mux is the Shape of Markets to Come 8.4.1995
In Part 1 of "The Need for Speed" (Friday Facts, July 21, 1995) we introduced the Patton Model 1035 short range modem. The Model 1035 was thefirst new product announcement in a series of high speed versions of current Patton products. In Part 2 of this ongoing mini-series we shine the spotlight onthe new Patton Model 3032 two port, high speed, miniature stat mux. The Model 3032 supports asynchronous sub-channel data rates to 57.6 Kbps anda composite channel data rate of 115.2 Kbps. But why all this emphasis on speed? Very simply, advancements in computing technologies and communication services are fueling market demand forhigher speed data comm products. First, new Power PCs and Pentium systems put more power on the desktop, and allow individual users (not justnetworks of users) to communicate at speeds much greater than the typical 19.2Kbps of previous RS-232 serial interfaces. Second the Internet, videoconferencing, LAN interconnectivity and other demanding applications cannot tolerate a single slow link in the communications chain. Such sophisticatedapplications don't merely run better using high speed communications hardware-they must have it! Third, digital WAN technologies such as 64 Kbps DDSor 128 Kbps ISDN, which were the exclusive tools of institutional IS managers, are now becoming cost effective for small companies and evenindividuals. The bottom line is this: if computing hardware, software applications and communication channels are all migrating toward higher speeds across the board, the datacom hardware that links it all together had better keep up with the herd! Which brings us back to the new Patton Model 3032. Because of itsability to support WAN data rates, it can realistically be used to connect two souped-up workstations (each communicating at 57.6 Kbps) to anasynchronous ISDN terminal adapter running at 115.2 Kbps or a CSU/DSU communicating at 57.6 Kbps. So while the Model 3022 finds its niche inlower speed analog communications, the Model 3032 is targeted for high speed digital communications. The Model 3032 is priced at $225 and isscheduled to ship September 1, 1995.
