T1 CSU/DSU is also a 1.544 Mbps Campus Modem

7.10.1998

GAITHERSBURG, Maryland, USA, July 10, 1998 - Patton Electronics Company has just unveiled a T1-to-V.35 interface converter that also functions as a T1CSU/DSU and campus short range modem. The Patton 2711 connects to a 4-wireT1 circuit and plugs directly into the V.35 interface of a router, switch ormultiplexer. Connecting to an unstructured T1 circuit at 1.544 Mbps, thePatton 2711 also supports nx56/64 framed connections at data rates from 128kbps to 1.536 Mbps. In addition, the Patton 2711 may be used in pairs inpoint-to-point applications, where it is able to connect two V.35 devices atdata rates to 1.544 Mbps over distances to 1.14 miles/1.82 km.

The Patton 2711 supports D4/AMI or B8ZS/ESF line coding and framing, internal or network clocking, and selectable 0, 7.5 or 22.5 db line buildout (LBO) levels. These parameters are user configurable via internal DIPswitch settings. The Patton 2711 is also switch-configurable for clearchannel (1.544 Mbps) or fractional (nx56/64 kbps) operation. Fractionalsettings include 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16 and 24 channels (for example, settingthe Patton 2711 at "224/256 kbps" would activate four 56/64 kbps channels).

Measuring only 4.6" long, 2.1" wide and 0.81" high (11.6 x 5.3 x 2.1 cm),the Patton 2711 incorporates one RJ-48C jack for modular connection to thenetwork and one M/34 connector that plugs directly into a standard V.35interface on a router, switch or multiplexer. Non-standard V.35 adaptercables are available from Patton; for example, M/34 to HD-60 for use withCisco routers.

The Patton 2711 has seven diagnostic LEDs showing transmit data (TXD),receive data (RXD), loss of sync (LOS), alarm (ALM), error (ERR), test (TST)and power (PWR). Diagnostics include response to Central Office initiatedD4 loopup and loopdown codes, ESF line loop and payload loop FDL messages, and universal loopback de-activate message. Power is supplied to the Patton2711 by an external AC transformer.

Applications
The Patton 2711 functions primarily as a low-cost T1-to-V.35 interfaceconverter-CSU/DSU, connecting a V.35 equipped router, switch or multiplexerto a 4-wire T1 circuit. The Patton 2711 is DIP switch selectable forunframed (1.544 Mbps) or structured (nx56/64kbps) operation. Adapter cablesare available to connect the Patton 2711 to WAN equipment that does not usea standard V.35 interface (such as the Cisco 2501 router, which uses ahigh-density 60 pin connector). When installed in pairs, the Patton 2711 isable to operate as a high speed campus short range modem, extending asynchronous V.35 connection up to 6,000 ft (1.14 miles/1.82 km) over twotwisted pairs. Data rates are switch selectable between 128 kbps and 1.544Mbps.

Pricing and Availability
The Patton 2711 T1-to-V.35 interface converter-CSU/DSU is US list priced at$595 each, including 120 VAC wall mount power supply (a Universal Input ACpower supply with IEC-320 male connector is also available). Adapter cablesare available from Patton to fit non-standard V.35 connector such as DB-25and HD-60. The Patton 2711 is manufactured in the USA; product is scheduledto begin shipping in August, 1998.
