VDSL2/ADSL2+ Modems, Bridges & Routers
OnSite OS-SFP VDSL2/ADSL2+ SFP Modem & Long-Range Ethernet Extender Module

This SFP module can operate as a VDSL2 or ADSL2+ Subscriber CPE connecting to any standards based DSLAM or can be used in pairs to deliver High Speed Ethernet Extension over Copper at distances up to 10,000 feet (3km). The SFPs can also be used to turn any Ethernet Switch with SFP slots into an IP-DSLAM.

Overview

Patton’s Onsite OS-SFP units transform Ethernet SFP ports into high-performance VDSL2/ADSL2 copper interfaces, enabling network equipment to communicate over existing single-pair copper infrastructure without requiring an external DSL modem or Ethernet extender.

The device can be plugged into Media Converters, Ethernet Switches or Routers to deliver ADSL/VDSL connectivity or Ethernet Extension links.

Available for both VDSL2/ADSL2 subscriber access and point-to-point Ethernet extension, the OS-SFP Series places the complete copper transmission system inside a compact SFP module.

The device provides a VDSL2/ADSL2 CPE modem designed to connect directly to compatible carriers, service-providers or private-network DSLAMs.  The OS-SFP is available in a CopperLink- style 2-Packs with CO/CPE pairs for creating transparent Ethernet connections over existing copper wiring.

The OS-SFP platform combines standards-based VDSL2/ADSL2 technology, advanced line optimization and compact SFP integration to reuse installed copper infrastructure, reduce external equipment, simplify installation and extend network connectivity far beyond conventional Ethernet cabling limitations.

Many standard DSL services, using copper in the local loop, have migrated to fiber, but rural carriers still leverage DSL and in Industrial and Private Wire enterprise networks there is a strong argument to preserve or re-use the Copper while modernizing the network.

Large facilities, campuses, transportation systems, industrial sites and telecommunications networks often contain extensive installed copper infrastructure that remains electrically serviceable even though the applications originally using it have disappeared. OS-SFP enables that infrastructure to carry modern Ethernet connectivity without the construction cost and disruption associated with replacing every copper run with fiber or new structured cabling.

Because VDSL2/ADSL2 uses one copper pair, OS-SFP can be particularly valuable where existing wiring cannot support conventional four-pair Ethernet.

Copper-loop performance depends on distance, wire gauge, cable construction, noise environment and other installation conditions. Rather than relying on a single fixed Ethernet rate, OS-SFP is designed to adapt its DSL connection to the available copper channel. The underlying platform supports online reconfiguration mechanisms including Seamless Rate Adaptation, bit swapping and Dynamic Interleaver Depth, while the CO/CP Ethernet Extension implementation automatically selects an appropriate operating speed for the connected cable and distance.

Underneath its simple SFP implementation is a highly integrated DMT-based broadband architecture supporting advanced VDSL2 transmission techniques. G.INP retransmission provides physical-layer recovery from impulse-noise events, while CPE-side G.vector capability supports deployment with compatible vectored DSL infrastructure. Upstream and downstream power back-off provide additional mechanisms for managing transmission behavior in multi-pair cable environments.  The platform also supports ADSL2/ADSL2+ fallback in CPE operation, providing an additional potential interoperability capability for legacy broadband infrastructure.

The OS-SFP is a compact solution that supports highly serviceable network architectures.  Moving the DSL modem into an SFP, OS-SFP reduces the number of standalone devices, external power supplies and interconnecting Ethernet cables normally required to terminate a copper broadband connection. Modules can be installed or replaced making copper connectivity another selectable physical interface within compatible network equipment.

Applications
CO/CP Industrial Point to Point Ethernet Extension
Install the OS-SFP into any media converter, switch, or router to deliver industrial ethernet at distance.

DSL CPE Replacement with 3rd Party DSLAM Interoperability
Use existing IP DSLAMs with remote OS-SFPs for Residential or Hospitality application to deliver IP Telephony, IP TV and Wireless Internet.

Turn Any Enterprise Ethernet or MPLS Switch into a DSLAM
The OS-SFPs can be used on multipoint SFP Ethernet Switches to create a modern day IP DSLAM with whatever routing and networking features needed for modern deployments.

Features
  • ADSL/VDSL in an SFP - Integrates the VDSL2/ADSL2 modem, analog front end and Ethernet interface within a compact pluggable module, eliminating the need for a separate external DSL modem or Ethernet Extender.
  • CPE or CO/CP Extender - Can be used for connection to an industry-standard DSLAM or in pairs for point-to-point Ethernet-over-copper extension solution (Local and Remote 2-Pack).
  • IP-DSLAM - CO units can be installed in any multipoint SFP Ethernet Switch to create a multi-port IPDSLAM for aggregation of paired DSL CO/CP Links.
  • Single-Pair Operation - Carries broadband Ethernet over a single twisted copper pair, allowing organizations to reuse existing telephone, voice-grade or structured cabling instead of installing new Ethernet or fiber infrastructure.
  • High Speed Mid-Range - Extends Ethernet connectivity at rates up to 150Mbps and distances up to 3 km (10,000 ft) dramatically exceeding the 100-meter reach of conventional Ethernet cabling.
  • Adaptive Performance - Automatically establishes an optimum transmission rate based on copper-loop distance and line conditions, balancing bandwidth and reach without requiring manual line-rate configuration.
  • Standards-Based - Supports ITU-T G.993.2 VDSL2 for interoperability with standards-based broadband infrastructure and supports VDSL2 profiles 8a/b/c/d, 12a/b, 17a and 30a through the underlying modem architecture.
  • Advanced Line Protection - G.INP physical-layer retransmission improves resilience against impulsive noise and transient line impairments, helping sustain reliable communications on demanding copper circuits.
  • CPE-Side Vectoring - G.vector support on the CPE platform helps mitigate crosstalk when interoperating with compatible vectored VDSL2/ADSL2 access equipment.
  • Dynamic Line Optimization - Seamless Rate Adaptation (SRA), bit swapping and Dynamic Interleaved Depth enable the VDSL2 connection to adapt to changing copper-loop conditions while maintaining service.
  • Power Back-Off - Upstream and downstream power back-off capabilities help optimize operation in multi-pair copper environments where multiple broadband services share the same cable plant.
  • Low-Latency Architecture - Hardware-based dual latency paths and optimized DSL processing support latency-sensitive network applications, including voice and other real-time traffic.
  • VLAN Transparent - Supports IEEE 802.1Q VLAN-tagged Ethernet traffic, preserving VLAN information across extended copper connections.
  • Hot-Pluggable - Adds copper broadband capability directly to compatible Ethernet equipment through a familiar SFP interface, reducing equipment footprint, cabling and power requirements compared with standalone modem solutions.
  • Integrated Copper Protection - Line-side protection incorporates common-mode suppression and gas-discharge protection, while the LRE design specifies ITU-T K.21 surge protection up to 6 kV in differential and common modes.
  • Extended Temperature - Supports operation from -20°C to +75°C for deployment in telecommunications, enterprise and demanding network environments.
