Media Switching & Routing

Media Switching and/or Routing is about connecting audio, video and other media from sources (inputs) to destinations (outputs). Since the analog-to-digital migration ensued, with the advent of SDI (Serial Digital Interface), switching and routing use electronic matrices (DSPs) to connect specific inputs to specific outputs. Modern SDI-based switches and routers are expensive and need to matrix switch 1152x1152 for an HD-capable network.

The Media Broadcast and ProAV markets are quickly migrating to IP (Internet Protocol) to carry media and deliver switching and routing over Ethernet networks. New IP-based standards, such as SMPTE 2110, power-up IP networks to deliver necessary precision and deterministic reliability for multi-media.

Switching and routing systems have evolved to provide analog to digital conversions, embedding and de-embedding audio, incorporate encapsulation to IP (encoding/decoding), switching of real-time signals from any source to any destination, while performing up- and down conversions, transitions, failover capabilities.
