The Problem
Network Operators, Carriers and Service Providers need to manage a complex array of interconnections, peering and transit exchanges with other Operators. They need to modernize their network interconnections while protecting and extending previous investments and maintaining support for legacy services and regulatory requirements. Whenever possible, they need to offload PSTN traffic over a modern cost efficient IP/SIP networks. Efficient solutions are needed to bridge legacy SS7, PRI, VoIP and NGN, LTE and IMS networks.
The Picture
In this picture, the Signaling Gateway is used to offload or backhaul PSTN traffic over a modern cost efficient IP/SIP network.
The Solution
- Patton's Signaling Gateway solution offer signaling conversion providing a translation to pass call control information between dissimilar networks such as legacy SS7 networks and IP-based networks.
- It enables Operations to extend SS7 TDM links over IP avoiding expensive dedicated TDM links, using the IP network to carry SS7 traffic.
- The solution offers SS7, SIGTRAN, ISDN PRI, CAS R2, T1 CAS and SIP; and can covert from any protocol to any other protocol.
- Patton's Signaling Gateway solution can function either with or without a Softswitch communicating using MEGACO or H.248.
- The solution supports SIGTRAN and can transfer signaling messages between Common Channel Signaling Nodes (CCS) and/or between Signaling Transfer Points (STP) and performs packet level translation from SS7 signaling to SIGTRAN signaling. It provides a wide range of user adaptation layers including SCTP, M2UA, M3UA and M2PA.
- The solution also provides "protocol conversion" to convert from one network operational model to another. For example the solution supports SIP to ISUP for call control, SIP to TCAP for address translation, or SIP to MAP for location or presence.
- Patton's signaling gateway solution can be used to Interwork GSM, UMTS, CDMA, and satellite networks in 2G, 3G, and 4G/LTE architectures, provide Class 4/IP Tandem/IP Trunking and Class 5/subscriber interworking, deliver SIP-based services to legacy TDM-based customer, replace legacy TDM central office switches and/or perform IP-to-IP protocol, signaling and/or codec conversion.

The Details
Network Operators, Carriers and Service Providers need to support a wide scope of legacy and modern network technologies and manage a complex array of interconnections, peering and transit exchanges with other Operators. They need to support connections using legacy SS7, PRI, VoIP and NGN, LTE and IMS networks.
Patton's Signaling Gateway solution offer signaling conversion providing a translation to pass call control information between dissimilar networks such as legacy SS7 networks and IP-based networks. The solution offers SS7, SIGTRAN, ISDN PRI, CAS R2, T1 CAS and SIP; and can covert from any protocol to any other protocol. Patton's SN10K can be used as a stand-alone Signaling Gateway or part of a Media Gateway system.
The solution enables Operators to modernize their network interconnections while protecting and extending previous investments and maintaining support for legacy services and regulatory requirements. It enables Operations to extend SS7 TDM links over IP avoiding expensive dedicated TDM links, using the IP network to carry SS7 traffic.
Patton's Signaling Gateway solutions are most often deployed as part of a Media Gateway using the SN10K series. In SS7/IP applications, the media gateway terminates PSTN circuits and packetizes the media streams for IP transport using RTP. Patton's Signaling Gateway solution can function either with or without a Softswitch communicating using MEGACO or H.248.
The solution supports SIGTRAN, which is a standard-based way to translate SS7 signaling to IP signaling. As a SIGTRAN Gateway the SN10K transfers signaling messages between Common Channel Signaling Nodes (CCS) and/or between Signaling Transfer Points (STP) and performs packet level translation from SS7 signaling to SIGTRAN signaling. It provides a wide range of user adaptation layers including SCTP, M2UA, M3UA and M2PA.
The solution also provides "protocol conversion" to convert from one network operational model to another. For example the solution supports SIP to ISUP for call control, SIP to TCAP for address translation, or SIP to MAP for location or presence.
Fixed line and mobile service providers use Patton's signaling gateway solution to Interwork GSM, UMTS, CDMA, and satellite networks in 2G, 3G, and 4G/LTE architectures, provide Class 4/IP Tandem/IP Trunking and Class 5/subscriber interworking, deliver SIP-based services to legacy TDM-based customer, replace legacy TDM central office switches and/or perform IP-to-IP protocol, signaling and/or codec conversion.
Operators need reliable, flexible signaling, messaging and media solutions that can meet a range of challenges. They need scalable, robust session and media control platforms to meet changing needs and to interconnect with legacy and NGN LTE / IMS networks. They need flexibility to enable them to launch new products, respond to competitive and regulatory pressure and deliver new innovative services.
