Since the early days of media broadcast, accurate timing has been required. Microphones, Cameras, Audio Recorders need to be synchronized. As broadcasters make the transition from serial digital interface (SDI) to partial or complete reliance on IP technology, accurate and reliable time transfer over Ethernet is also imperative. The SMPTE ST 2059 has been created to use IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) as a combined standard for media signal generation and synchronization.Massive amounts of data are transported through various communication systems at bandwidths, with different performance requirements and interfaces in all aspects of creation, including Contribution, Production and Distribution networks.
