SCADA Networking and SCADA Ethernet Solutions

Industrial Ethernet is using Ethernet in an industrial environment.  It can be as simple as Ethernet based products designed with ruggedized, environmentally hardened packaging for use in facilities subjected to extreme temperatures, humidity, dust, chemicals and vibrations, as well as electrical noise.  Industrial Ethernet can also address protocols that provide deterministic and real-time control of machines.  Special protocols for Industrial Ethernet include EtherCAT, PROFINET, POWERLINK, SERCOS III, CC-Link IE, and Modbus TCP.   Industrial Ethernet protocols use a modified MAC layer to provide low latency and more "real-time" performance.

SCADA stands for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition and refers to a means of remote access to a variety of control modules through a standard automation protocol. SCADA is a system consisting of controllers, network interfaces, input/output and software.   SCADA systems are used to monitor and control equipment in the industrial processes such as manufacturing.  These industrial processes are very diverse and include automated fabrication, gas and oil distribution, electrical power production, water distribution and traffic systems.  SCADA architectures rely on programmable logic controllers (PLCs) or remote terminal units (RTUs).  PLCs and RTUs are microcomputers that locally communicate and control machines, sensors and other end devices.  PLCs interface with computers which run SCADA software.  The SCADA software processes, distributes, and displays the data, helping operators and other employees analyze the data and make important decisions.
