TEMPEST EMI/RFI Data Security

TEMPEST is an acronym for "Telecommunications and Electrical Machinery Protected from Emanations Security". TEMPEST refers to US DOD and NATO technology and certification testing to provide security of information systems by the elimination of "leaking emanations", including unintentional radio or electrical signals, sounds, and vibrations. TEMPEST describes methods for spying on unshielded equipment and how to shield equipment. TEMPEST protection efforts are also known as emission security (EMSEC), which is a subset of communications security (COMSEC). Distance, shielding, filtering, and masking are all methods use to mitigate against EMSEC issues.

Patton TEMPEST EMI/RFI Data Security Solutions

  • Patton's FiberPlex brand products are specially designed to suppress compromising emanations and deliver separation between BLACK and RED communications environments using TEMPEST tested and approved products.
  • FiberPlex products "clean" the digital data of any emanations and restore it to its pure form before it leaves the sensitive area.
  • FiberPlex products are used in conjunction with Services from Patton for the construct of Data Diodes solutions. Data diodes separate and create boundaries between trusted and untrusted networks and straddle the demarcation line between them. FiberPlex products can operate in transmit-only data diode configuration and are frequently used in Data Diode systems design.
  • FiberPlex products also perform "use-case" specific isolation and conversion for common installation needs such as integrating an audio channel together with an RS-232 interface and a contact closure, commonly needed together for secure networking.
  • FiberPlex products can perform Data and Clock Buffering, but are otherwise completely transparent to protocols, handshaking and signaling.

Avaya Needed a TSG-6 Secure SIP Phone to Support Government Installations in Secure Facilities
All electronic devices emit compromising emanations, including IP phones. Avaya needed theirs to satisfy US Government standards for installation in SCIFs.
FiberPlex Products Squash Compromising Emanations on the Navy USS Nimitz Supercarrier
With the need for SATCOM serial data transmission equipment as part of its new CANES system, TEMPEST EMI/RFI Data Security was needed on the USS Nimitz.
