Patton and Lydis: Subscribers in the Netherlands Who Depend on ISDN Trunks Need Not Fear the End of ISDN Services

All kinds of ISDN-dependent voice-integrated systems are installed in the Netherlands. The PBX platforms deliver Telephony, Security, Intercoms, Paging, and Emergency Notification. Those systems can't just be forklift upgraded to all IP just because ISDN trunks are End-of-Life in the Netherlands.

Synopsis
ISDN is going away in the Netherlands, but scores of subscribers can't just jump into an All-IP network by the end of 2019. Investments in on-premise ISDN-based systems, some of which are inextricably fused with established business-processes preclude a reckless dismantling of those systems. Customers need to have control, choice, and a way to make the migration to All-IP or UCaaS at their own pace.

The Picture
Patton's SmartNodes replaces the ISDN BRI or PRI services by terminating the SIP Trunk and delivering the same ISDN interfaces to the subscribers' on-premise systems. Once the SmartNode is plugged-in; it's MAC Address is reported to the Service Provider for Auto-Provisioning and the SIP Trunk Configuration to BRI is delivered to the unit. It's auto-magical and service is deployed in less than 5 mins.

The Success
  • The Patton SmartNode eSBC connects to any SIP Trunk and delivers the same ISDN BRI trunk services subscribers need.
  • Together, Lydis and Patton enable subscribers to keep dependable on-premise systems in operation, while leveraging the value of SIP trunking.
  • Patton's SmartNodes give power; choice and control back to subscribers and enable them to transition to All-IP in an orderly fashion and on their own timeliness.
  • Patton and Lydis work together with end-customers (subscribers) and their trusted integrators to develop strategies and plans to leverage the full value of All-IP and UC.
  • Zero-Touch provisioning and the Patton Cloud make the transition easy for whoever is deploying the solution (the Service Provider, the Integrator or the Subscriber themselves).
  • The SmartNode devices and the Patton Cloud are certified and integrated with major Service Providers in the Netherlands including interoperability and automated provisioning with Broadsoft (now Cisco) BroadWorks DMS and other Softswitch and IMS cores.
  • The Patton Cloud enables Service Providers and Integrators to scale for deployment and management of the large number of installations needed by the end of 2019.

The Story

Lydis is a Value Added Distributor in the Benelux for IP-Communication solutions. A network of indirect resellers, including Service Providers and System Integrators, support customers. The Lydis ecosystem includes premise and cloud; enterprise and carrier Softswitch technologies like Asterisk and Broadsoft.

It was not welcome news to many, when KPN announced the end-of-life of their ISDN Line Services in favor of SIP Trunks and Hosted Telephony or UCaaS. The notice period was short; service termination by the end 2019. Scores of customers have investments in on-premise ISDN based systems. They want to keep those systems in place, at least for some years. Others must keep existing ISDN systems because they are inextricably fused with established business-processes or they enable industry-specific regulatory compliances.

These "legacy" systems which rely on ISDN trunks are not just providing telephones to workers sitting at desks. All kinds of voice-integrated systems are used for Security, Intercoms, Paging, Announcements and Emergency Notification. Many systems are integrated with door phones, fax machines, modems, alarming circuits and unique end-points. Given the short notice, panicked Dutch customers are searching for an immediate solution to the problem, while taking the need time to plan on using the disruptive technology to improve their business and work through an orderly migration.

Lydis and Patton joined forces to help Dutch customers out of an otherwise dire situation. The Patton SmartNode can be connected to any SIP Trunk and deliver the same ISDN BRI trunk services subscribers need to keep those dependable on-premise systems in operation. The SmartNode also enables migration to new services since it supports both ISDN and SIP services.

The Patton Cloud makes the transition easy for whoever is deploying the solution (the Service Provider, the Integrator or the Subscriber themselves). The solution is certified and integrated with major Service Providers in the Netherlands. This includes integration with the Broadsoft/Cisco BroadWorks DMS and other Softswitch and IMS cores used by providers. This answer allows resellers to cope with a large number of installations needed by the end of 2019. More importantly, it empowers customers with choice and control over the timing of a switch of All-IP.
