Transcoding Solution Delivers Interoperability, Compression & Efficiency for Carrier Interconnect

Patton's Transcoding Gateway solution delivers trascodeded calls from TDM-to-IP networks, IP-to-TDM networks, or IP-to-IP networks, and between wire line and wireless networks.

The Problem
With a growing number of codecs in the network, service providers need to perform Audio Transcoding, or conversion from 1 Codec type to another to bridge differences between the telecommunications systems in various states of network evolution. Exploding traffic combined with bandwidth constraints means that compression is needed to minimize network costs.

The Picture
A wide range of voice codec conversion is performed in the Interconnect when the north and south bound traffic from the gateway requires a different vocoder. Hardware based dedicated DSP for media handling delivers a guaranteed number of voice channels for various voice coder combinations.

The Solution
  • Patton's Transcoding Gateway solution delivers trascodeded calls from TDM-to-IP networks, IP-to-TDM networks or IP-to-IP networks.
  • Support transcoding and compression among most voice codecs, Patton's SN10K Series bridges between wire line and wireless networks in various states of network evolution.
  • Using the full capacity of VoIP Channels the solution simplifies network designs, lowers CAPEX and delivers significant network efficiency gains.
  • Universal Codec support includes G.711, G.723.1, G.726 (and G.729a/ab.
  • Wire-line Codec support includes G.728, G.729eg and iLBC (13kbps or 15kbps).
  • Wireless Codec support includes AMR, GSM-FR, GSM-EFR, EVRC, QCELP and G.722.2 / AMR-WB.
  • Support for the full SS7 signaling stack means the SN10K can be seamlessly integrated with existing TDM infrastructure easing deployment and maintenance of Transcoding Gateway solutions.
  • Patton's Transcoding Gateway Solution offers very high capacity to maximize operational savings on rack space, power, maintenance, monitoring, sparing, and logistics.

The Details

In a modern telecom network, voice and video is encoded into "data" (binary 1s and 0s). This encoding is done to support the transport of the voice and video over either TDM or IP Networks. Encoding is performed using algorithms called codecs (short for coder-decoder aka vocoder). In the Digital or "TDM" world G.711 is the basic codec which compressed a very narrow range of audio frequencies into a 64kbit/s stream for transport and multiplexing using DS0s (1-channel of a T1 or E1 line).

Perpetual technology advances, migration away from TDM networks (to an IP core) as well as the explosion of Mobile voice together has vastly widened Codecs diversity. With a growing number of codecs in the network, service providers need to perform Audio Transcoding, or conversion from 1 Codec type to another.

Transcoding is performed in order to bridge differences between the telecommunications systems and to support different Codecs between calling and the called parties. Transcoding has to be done to ensure that various network types and network service providers can interoperate with each other regardless of the state of their network evolution. Exploding traffic combined with bandwidth constraints means that compression is needed to minimize network costs, which is also optimized using Transcoding.

Patton's SN10K Media Gateway products support transcoding among most voice codecs, supporting trascodeded calls from TDM-to-IP networks, IP-to-TDM networks or IP-to-IP networks and between wire line and wireless networks. Using the full capacity of VoIP channels the SN10K units simplify network designs, lowering CAPEX and delivering efficiency gains.

Supported Codecs include universal codecs such as G.711 (with packet durations: 20,30,40,50 and 60 msec), G.723.1 (30,60 and 90 msec), G.726 ( 20,30,40,50 and 60 msec) and G.729a/ab (20,30,40,50,60,70 and 80 msec).

Wireline Codec support includes G.728 (20,30,40,50 and 60 msec), G.729eg (20,30,40,50,60,70 and 80 msec) and iLBC (13kbps; 30 and 60 msec, and 15kpbs; 20 and40 msec).

Wireless Codec support includes AMR (20,40,60 and 80 msec), GSM-FR (20 and 30 msec), GSM-EFR (20,40 and 60 msec), EVRC (20,40 and 60 msec), QCELP (20,40 and 60 msec) and G.722.2 / AMR-WB (20,40,60 and80 msec).

Support for the full SS7 signaling stack means the SN10K can be seamlessly integrated with existing TDM infrastructure easing deployment and maintenance of Transcoding Gateway solutions. With a reliability rating of 99.999% (five nine's) and backed by full redundancy, available either in 1+1, or n+1 solutions, our solutions is the most reliable and stable system on the market.

Patton's Transcoding Gateway Solution offers very high capacity to maximize operational savings on rack space, power, maintenance, monitoring, sparing, and logistics.
