Converting IPv6 to IPv4 using an IPv6 to IPv4 Converter, IPv4 to IPv6 Gateway, or Virtualized IPv6 to IPv4 Network Gateway

An IPv6 to IPv4 Gateway is known by many names, including IPv4 IPv6 converter, IPv6 to IPv4 gateway, IPv6 to IPv4 network gateway, IPv6 converter, IPv6 gateway, or IPv4 converter. Some people refer to these solutions as IPv6 Compatibility tool, IPv6 compatibility appliance, IPv6 compatibility device, IPv6 transition mechanism or IPv4 to IPv6 tool.

The IPv6 to IPv4 gateway is an IPv6 transition mechanism that facilitates migration from IPv4 to IPv6. These network gateways are positioned between networks to provide protocol conversion between an older network that uses IPv4 infrastructure (in use since 1983) and a modern network that uses the successor addressing-and-routing protocol: IPv6.

What is a virtualized IPv6 to IPv4 Gateway? A virtualized or virtual IPv4 to IPv6 Network Gateway is exactly as described above only delivered as a software-only network gateway or Software-as-a-Service (SaaS).

Because an IPv4 network is not interoperable with an IPv6 network, transition technologies enable hosts on both networks to communicate with each other. Whether it is called an IPv4 converter or an IPv6 converter, the network gateway allows an enterprise to avoid the expense and complexity of engaging an (RFC 3053) IPv6 tunnel broker (a.k.a. IPv6 broker) to ensure interoperability and migration from IPv4 to IPv6.

Virtual SmartNode IPv4 to IPv6 Network Gateway

The vSN IPv6 Gateway is a member of the SmartNode product family. It is one of several useful applications/use cases the virtual SmartNode can provide as virtual customer premise equipment (vCPE). By providing an IPv6 transition mechanism and IPv6 compatibility, the vSN IPv6 to IPv4 Network Gateway allows enterprises to support the current generation of IPv4 devices and emerging IPv6 devices concurrently, while seamlessly managing the organizations migration to IPv6 at their own desired pace. Virtualization technology allows user capacity and network gateway features to be added or removed as needed in real time or on automated scheduled using the Patton Cloud Edge Orchestration service.

Teach Me: Converting IPv6 to IPv4: Convert IPv4 IPv6 - Virtualized IPv6 to IPv4 Network Gateway

Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) is the latest, most up-to-date version of the Internet Protocol (IP). IP is the digital communications protocol that routes digital traffic across the Internet while providing identification and location information for networked computers (hosts). The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) foresaw the impending IPv4 address exhaustion and designed IPv6 to resolve the imminent shortage. IPv6 was developed to replace IPv4, which has been the de facto standard since 1982, and is quickly running out of available address space. Deployment of the new-generation IPv6 has been ongoing since the mid-2000s. Eventually, IPv6 is expected to replace IPv4.

IPv6 uses a 128-bit address, theoretically allowing 2128, or approximately 3.4x1038 addresses. The actual number is slightly smaller, as multiple ranges are reserved for special use or completely excluded from use. The two protocols are not designed to be interoperable, and thus direct communication between them is impossible, complicating the move to IPv6, and thereby creating the need for IPv6 to IPv4 Network Gateways.

Many large enterprises, including Microsoft, are turning off IPv4 and turning on IPv6 exclusively for use within the organization. The network gateway provides interoperability between IPv4 and IPv6 networks and provides protocol translation (also known as IP masquerading).

Virtualization technology combined with cloud-based network-edge orchestration offers several valuable benefits, beginning with touchless, automated service deployment and activation. Whether virtualized and delivered in the cloud, or downloaded for operation on bare metal virtual customer premise equipment (vCPE), Network Gateway capacity and service equality can be automated and scheduled, based on forecasted demand. By removing the limitations of a dedicated hardware appliance, Virtualization technology offers increased reliability and higher network availability when transitioning from IPv4 to IPv6.

Edge Orchestration
Whether the virtualized network-gateway software is delivered in the cloud (using the SaaS model), or downloaded and installed at the subscriber premise on a bare-metal universal CPE (uCPE), Network Edge Orchestration (a.k.a. intelligent edge) is typically required to activate, configure, scale (up or down), monitor and control the VNF-based virtualized IPv6 to IPv4 network gateway software service as well as remotely managing and monitoring the IPv6 network implementation within the organization.
